Episode 9: Sam Lightner fights for your right to party (climb).

In Episode 9, we start with a lengthy, then a short, then again lengthy discussion of author and climbing-crusader Sam Lightner’s special daisy chain. If you are still awake, then keep listening for stories of the infamous FOICers, Thailand, and why the Access Fund has your back. Not unlike his daisy chain, Sam can be both rigid and flaccid as the situation demands when standing up for your rights with megalomaniacal land managers.

  1. Haha! Love Kelly’s tips for mental strength for Alpine Climbing. That’s exactly how I think, Brilliant. Cheers guys!

  2. Hey dude,

I’m trans, I climb, and I love your podcast. I know your ladyboys comment was in jest and wasn’t intended to hurt anyone, but what if you had said “are you sure they weren’t girly looking faggots?” Serious bummer times all around, and people would call you on it. You’d gain a reputation for the dude that bashes aid climbing and all the queers, which would suck, because I know from telepathy that you’re way more rad than that.

Anyway, it’s a slur, even though it’s not a well known one. People like me are used to being punchlines, but unfortunately a lot of us are also used to being bashed and killed, which is, ya know, harder to take lightly.

Anyway, I listen to your show all the time so I thought I’d give you shit for that.

    Cheers!

    1. Lesson learned. As you know, comments like that are kinda stuck in the boys culture of climbing. I will try to be more sensitive in the future both on the edit and with my words. My apologies.

Glad you’re willing to stick with the show anyway.

      1. No worries! Thanks for the reply. Your podcast maintains my stoke level in the mornings before 12 hour nursing shifts, and for that I am forever indebted to you.

Best podcast ever, now with more respect points!

  3. I feel like climbers are always trying to find solutions to non-existant problems, but it does prevent anyone from wearing their daisy “thong style.” Although… tommy caldwell did wear his daisy like that when he freed two routes on el cap in a day, check the scene when he frees the great roof on dosage 4 if you don’t believe me. Great episode! It’s good to hear more about what climbers should be doing to ensure access to climbing areas. Although it does seem slightly ridiculous that the park service reads internet forums, and take’s it seriously. I guess our tax dollars are better spent having rangers read supertopo than actually working… maybe I could get government funding to read climbing forums, I do it anyways.

    1. Oh, man. TC wears his daisy between his legs!? I stand corrected. I’m gonna start doing that…right after I knock a digit off my index finger. CK

  4. Your podcasts are keeping me sane as I drive all over the country, man! Thanks! I listened to the Steph Davis and Sam Lightner interviews on my way to Indian Creek for the very first time earlier this week and they set the tone well. I’m out here for the next three weeks, let me know if you’re in the area and need a (gumby) partner!

    1. Hey Toby,
Saw on your fb page that you were headed down to the creek. Have fun. Hopefully not too warm for you. I had a great season down there but i think im done. Colorado is just too nice to be pouring gas to head out there any more. Let me know how it goes for you!
