Episode 170: Tim Emmett – To Strive, To Seek, To Find.

On Episode 170 of the Enormocast, I practically rip Tim Emmett off the stage at the Michigan Ice Festival to sit down for an interview. Tim has been a climbing adventurer for over 20 years. This odyssey started in Wales, involved the then new-ish sport of deep water soloing, moved to ice climbing, competitive ice climbing, alpine climbing, and BASE jumping. Though his climbing started in the go-for-broke British scene, now a dad, now solidly in his 40s, Tim has learned to find a few boundaries to help guide him as a father, mentor, and husband. Still crushing and bound for Everest, Tim always has been, and always will be, a seeker of experience through performance.

  1. As a dad who sruggles with the balance between kid and climbing time, I really appreciate his perspective. One of my favorite episodes! So much better than that Alex Honnold bozo.

  2. So many years in and the Enormocast keeps churning out new favorites. My top ten best episode list is up to about twenty five episodes now. Impressive.

  3. Loved this one Chris, thanks for the enormocast’s incredible back catelogue of climbing culture which I’ve been enjoying ever since one of your friends told me about it six years ago!

  4. Tim’s outlook on BASE made sense to me. In any discipline, assuming a certain level of uncontrollable danger can pale the concept of risk: if you don’t expect to survive your sport, your approach may shift from calculation to numbness. Most who are shopping disciplines will find their own subjective line, and individual choices should be honored.

To me, Tim’s path shows why rock climbing forms the heart of adventure sports.

    1. Yeah. The BASE crowd definitely is full of “it will never happen to me” or “Wooooooooooooooooooooooo! Jump or die!”. Its nice to talk to somebody that had a calculated reason for NOT doing it.
