Enormocast 329: Cole Brauer – Every Day the Sea Part 2

On Episode 329 of the Enormocast, I resume my conversation with sailor, Cole Brauer. Cole made history and won the internet when she raced solo around the world in 2023. She live-streamed and updated often from her 130 day journey alone, finally coming in 2nd in the Global Solo Challenge. She was the first American woman to race nonstop around the globe. Then her personal doldrums set in as she resumed life onshore. Lost and bewildered by modernity and celebrity pressures, it took a year or more for Cole to return to the joys of sailing and racing. In the meantime, she finished her book, First Light, and eventually found the sea again. When opportunity knocked, Cole took a chance and joined Team Malizia and started racing one of the most high-tech boats on the ocean. First Light is in stores now.

Enormocast 326: Julia Cassou – Telling True Stories

On episode 326, I connect from Colorado to Chamonix to hear from French photographer and expedition climber, Julia Cassou. Julia grew up in a rural part of France in a town known for foie gras and its suggestive name (in English anyway). Her first camera was borrowed from her dad, and her first love was art photography on film. But once climbing appeared in University, the die was cast and Julia started shooting climbing. As her skills on ropes grew, and she found a knack for suffering, Julia became an in-demand documentarian for big climbs around the world: the Dawn Wall by sailboat with Seb Berthe, sailing to the Mirror Wall in Greenland, the Torres Del Paine, and more. Now at 30 years old, we find Julia at a perfect moment to reflect on her whirlwind life of telling other people’s true stories through her lens.

Cole Brauer joins the Enormocast after becoming the first American woman to race solo around the world in the Global Solo Challenge in 2023. The 30,000‑mile circumnavigation pushed her through storms, gear failures, sleep deprivation, and the kind of isolation only found in climbing in places like Baffin Island. During the race, Cole became its breakout star, documenting the journey with disarming honesty and a surprising amount of joy.
