Enormocast 243: Miranda Oakley – O, Brave New World

On Episode 243 of the Enormocast, I sit down with guide and climber, Miranda Oakley. Miranda busted out of Maryland just after college and never looked back. A job washing dishes in Tuolumne made her climbing dreams come true, but soon she was guiding hikes then climbs in Yosemite. Meanwhile, she was building skills for wall and trad climbing culminating in a NIAD rope-solo, first ascents in Patagonia, 5.13 flashes in Indian Creek. Miranda’s mother is Palestinian which has prompted Miranda to explore climbing in the Middle East and become an active liaison for the nascent Palestinian climbing community. On the verge of having a baby, Miranda is now preparing for her next life-adventure: momming hard and climbing hard.

Enormocast 228: Aaron Livingston – We Shall Be Brothers

Clockwise from top left: Spaceshot by Nolan Smythe, Aaron Livingston by Drew Smith, Aaron on Mt Hooker by Drew Smith

On Episode 228 of the Enormocast, I sit down with climber and guide, Aaron Livingston. A Utah native, Aaron splits his time between Ouray, Colorado and Moab, Utah while guiding for San Juan Mountain Guides. While we get to know Aaron in the first half of the interview, his purpose for coming in the show was to talk about his friend Nolan Smythe. Nolan was killed on El Gigante in Chihuahua, MX while climbing with Aaron. The two came up in climbing together and Aaron considered him a brother. The tale of their partnership is both inspiring and tragic, but in the end, Aaron caries Nolan’s flame as he continues to realize adventures that they had once dreamt of together.

Episode 196: Janelle and Mark Smiley – The Purpose Makes Strong the Vow.

On Episode 196 of the Enormocast, I sit down with couple, Janelle and Mark Smiley. Janelle and Mark spent much of the last decade in a van pursuing the 50 Classic Climbs of North America. In addition to that hair-brained addiction to climbing and alpinism, both are crack skiers and guides, with Mark and 18 year veteran mountain guide and Janelle a champion ski-mountaineering racer . On this episode, we learn of all the trials and tribulations of completing 48 of the 50 Classics (attempting all of them at least once), the ups and downs of love and vanlife, and more. Mark and Janelle also have launched climbing and skiing online learning courses at mtnsense.com with the simple mission of keeping you alive. These two have relentlessly pursued an exceptional life in the mountains together and it shows.
