Enormocast Tweener: Harvey Wright Returns with Patio Pacifica

On this in-between episode of the Enormocast, Harvey Wright from Episode 222 returns to discuss his ongoing treatment and recovery for addiction. But more importantly, Harvey is here to talk about his new album, Patio Pacifica, written almost entirely while in a Vancouver treatment facility. Also, we talk about the rough and dirty years since Harvey’s last appearance on the podcast, what it took to reenter treatment, and where climbing fits for him now. Harvey also plays some of his music from Patio Pacifica. All in all, another message of grace from this imperfect warrior.

On Episode 272 of the Enormocast, I connect with young trad-phenom, Connor Herson. Connor first burst into climbing’s collective consciousness with the 6th free ascent of the Nose at the tender age of 15. Connor had already climbed 14 5.14s by the age of 14 (say that ten times fast), and he went on to collect 50 by the age of 18. His resume includes two youth national lead titles and a few 5.14 first ascents. Most recently, Connor swept into Squamish and nabbed repeats of some of the hardest routes in the area. Connor credits his family’s connection to climbing with much of his success – his dad Jim was a hot Yosemite climber in his day, his mom is a tireless supporter and belayer, and his sister Kara was a successful youth climber. Mix that pedigree with a boatload of talent and you get a singular climber: Connor Herson.

Enormocast 222: Harvey Wright – Heart Like an Ocean

On Episode 222 of the Enormocast, I connect with Harvey Merritt Wright. Harvey Wright is a climber, musician, and hair dresser from Vancouver, BC and the recent subject of a full length documentary film, Crux. Harvey also deals with drug and alcohol addiction. When Harvey first started climbing, he hit it hard and quickly achieved some impressive feats in Yosemite and as far away as the Lotus Flower Tower. His renaissance from the party life to the climbing life cleaned him up and garnered the attention of his film maker friends, Casey Dubois and Zac Hoffman. But then the pandemic hit, lockdowns ensued, and the cracks were revealed as Harvey slid back into alcohol and drugs. Now, Harvey is realizing that climbing, though helpful as a piece of his therapy, won’t be the magical cure for his ailing mental health that he and Casey and Zac had hoped. Nevertheless, Harvey continues to learn to love himself and pursue a love of climbing that will serve him through the decades.
