Enormocast 226: Stacy Bare – Resist with Joy

On Episode 226 of the Enormocast, Stacy Bare (episode 103) returns to the Enormocast with an urgent message. At this moment, Afghanistan is in crisis and evacuations are underway for allies and Afghans who worked for, collaborated with, and trusted the American mission in their country. Through his Adventure Not War initiative, Stacy travelled to Afghanistan in 2019 to ski and film the nascent ski mountaineering community which had begun to flourish around Kabul. But now, not only are outdoor pursuits like climbing and skiing curtailed, the practitioners, promoters, and liaisons in Afghanistan’s outdoor community, especially the women, are under direct threat. Stacy returns to the Enormocast to implore us not just to help our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan right this minute, but to think about our relationship with the global outdoor community and what it means to be an American abroad climbing, skiing, and seeking our spiritual connections with the mountain people of the globe.

Enormocast 225: Manoah Ainuu – Life’s Sustenance

On Episode 225 of the Enormocast, I sit down in a yard with goats with ice climber, Manoah Ainuu. Manoah popped up on a lot of climbers’ radars in the film Black Ice from last year’s Reel Rock, but he’s been a North Face Athlete for 3 years and getting it done in Bozeman for longer. As a brown-skin climber and sporting long dreads, Manoah knows that he stands out in the ice climbing world, but that’s fine with him. His participation is his own statement about diversity. Above all, Manoah is trying to find a life balance that is a bit against the grain in the world of hard climbing and 20 something men: family, health, spirituality, climbing, in that order.

Enormocast 224: John “The Verm” Sherman – Foot on the Gas

On Episode 224 of the Enormocast, I connect with bouldering legend, John Sherman. “The Verm”, as he is widely known, is a seminal boulderer in America and the world. Known as much for his antics and his legendary toughness, John Sherman also likely bouldered there first as he spanned the continent looking for and developing blocks. He is also known as the progenitor of the V-grade system, though he wishes now he had not had that particular stoke of genius. Gone from the spotlight for a moment as he pursued photography, John is back in shape and attempting to repeat a route he did 30 years ago: Midnight Lightning.
